Caraval Review

ICaravalf you're looking for a good mystery with fantasy, magic, and romance... look no further than Stephanie Garber's Caraval Series.

Caraval is the first installment of the series which follows two sisters: Scarlett and Donatella Dragna. They live on a small island with their cruel and powerful father. All their lives Scarlett has been obsessed with the stories her grandmother had told her of Caraval. Caraval is a circus-like game filled with elaborate performances where reality mixes with magic and nothing is what it seems.  Throughout her childhood, Scarlett wrote letters to the mastermind behind the event, Legend, asking for an invitation. A few years of Caraval not happening, she had given up hope and agreed to join an arranged marriage by her father. Then an invitation arrives along with a mysterious sailor who has swooned her sister Donatella (Tella) and whisks them away. Once they arrive to the secluded island to join Caraval, Tella is kidnapped by none other than Legend himself. This year's game revolves around Tella and the person who finds her first wins the game and will be granted one wish.

The series gets better and better as it continues into the books Legend and Finale. The good news is (for you) that Finale was the final book of the series so you can binge read the whole series and not have to wait patiently like I had to for each book. Because let me tell you, once you're wrapped up in this wonderful world of Caraval, you won't want to leave.

Great for people who enjoy:

  • Twisted Games like The Goblet of Fire
  • Semi-Cliche Romances
  • A Sisterly Bond
  • Magic

And remember, "Whatever you've heard about Caraval, it doesn't compare to the reality. It's more than just a game or a performance. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world."
